Click play below to hear about phonological and phonemic awareness in upper elementary:
Welcome back to another episode in our series surrounding the science of reading. If you missed last week’s episode, I encourage you to go back and listen to that episode first. In that episode I provide some background knowledge that will be helpful for this episode. On today’s episode, I have my good friend Michelle from the Colorful Classroom here to talk about all things phonological awareness and what that looks like in upper elementary classrooms.
Michelle has a decade of experience as a reading interventionist and instructional literacy coach. Her expertise, especially around foundational skills, are sure to help all learners. She believes that all students can learn and her mission is to help build teacher knowledge until every child can read.
We first need to understand the difference between phonological and phonemic awareness. Phonological awareness is the study of sound patterns in our language that’s more auditory, while phonemic awareness focuses on the smaller units of sound in our language. Research states that a lack of phonemic awareness is the most powerful determinant of the likelihood of the failure to read. So how do we work on those foundational skills in the upper elementary classroom?
Michelle is an expert in this field and provides easy and effectives strategies that you can implement in your classroom today! Depending on how you run your classroom and literacy block, and the grade level that you teach, these strategies can be done as a whole group or with small group instruction. Remember, even if you teach upper elementary and not all of your students need phonemic practice, it will only strengthen their skills.
By the end of this episode, Michelle is going to help you understand the role that phonological and phonemic awareness play in your reading instruction, while also providing practical suggestions and strategies that you can implement in your classroom. Having a general understanding of these ideas and strategies are ultimately going to help strengthen your students’ word recognition and language comprehension skills when it comes to reading!
Keep listening for more episodes on the science of reading and more practical lesson ideas and strategies that you can put into practice. If you have further questions about the science of reading, please reach out on Instagram or email me and I’ll answer some of your questions on the last episode of this series!
