I’m pretty sure it’s in every teacher’s DNA to research best teaching practices to enhance literacy skills. I also think we often forget to research what we should NOT be doing during guided reading. I’m curious if you’ve ever done this? There are so many ineffective strategies that I see other teacher’s using and that I am absolutely guilty of having used as well!
I’m going to help you identify the strategies to avoid because, to be honest, they’re incorporated into many classroom routines. We think we’re helping the student’s and in the end we are actually hindering their independence. If you embrace the strategies I’ve provided, your students will take ownership of critical reading skills on their own. After all, if we’re doing all the talking, we’re doing all the work.
In this episode about guided reading I share:
-
Five things you should stop doing during guided reading
-
How to replace those ineffective strategies
-
Ways to empower our students to feel confident in their reading
-
An important bonus tip on incorporating writing into your guided reading lesson
Wherever you are in your teaching journey, remind yourself that you don’t have to make all of these changes at once. Start with one or two and go from there! Reach out to me on Instagram @thestellarteacher and let me know which tip is helping you the most!
