Happy Monday, friends! With summer quickly approaching, it’s time to start checking in with yourself and paying close attention to your health and wellness. On today’s episode, I have guest Alexis Shepard from The AfroEducator who is sharing 5 mindset shifts every teacher should make when it comes to self care.
Alexis Shepard believes in a human-centered approach to teaching and learning that emphasizes critical thinking and empathy. In 2018 she created her brand, The AfroEducator, where she uses her voice and expertise to empower educators to live more authentically.
Alexis and I have an open and honest conversation about how to help educators embrace self care and shift their way of thinking about it. A common myth about self care is that it will be a simple solution that will fix your unhappiness. However, self care involves a deep inner work that often changes and evolves as you move along your journey. We discuss how self care is not the solution to our problems, but a way to help us better handle the difficult situations that come our way.
A big takeaway from our conversation is that self care is really about self-awareness, learning to create a balance, and prioritize your tasks, but more importantly, making yourself a priority. In order to give your students all that they need, you need to be in the right mindset regarding yourself. With these mindset strategies from Alexis, you will be better equipped to handle difficult situations and start finding joy in your life again.
