Click play below to hear ways to reframe failure with your students:
“I’m a failure.” Unfortunately, this is a common saying amongst ourselves as teachers and adults, along with our students. But is anyone really a failure? Absolutely not! YOU are not a failure, but you might be experiencing failure, which is a part of the human experience. So how do we change the way we view failure and share that with our students? In today’s episode, I have guest Andrea Burns who discusses ways to reframe failure with your students using her new book Failure Friday.
Andrea Burns is extremely passionate about all things bookish. This includes children’s literature, the smell of a brand new book, or adding new picture and chapter books to her already full bookshelf. Andrea now lives in Kansas and works as a book buyer for a local bookstore. She has a Masters of Science in Curriculum & Instruction and loves to continually learn new things!
The idea of failure tends to have negative connotations surrounding it, which is why it’s so important to have productive conversations with our students about the topic. A perfect way to have those in a way students can understand is through Andrea’s book Failure Friday. This children’s book teaches kids about experiencing failure and making mistakes, but more importantly, learning from them and the lessons each failure teaches you.
My conversation with Andrea was so insightful and helped provide a positive mindset and reframe failure and the ideas surrounding it. One way Andrea eliminates those negative feelings is through the acronym of PIE, which stands for putting yourself out there, ignoring the self-talk, and enjoying the journey. Andrea hopes this is one way for teachers to use her book in their classrooms. We also discuss how to make it a year long discussion and connect it to standards as other ways for Failure Friday to be used by teachers.
No one likes to fail, but it’s unfortunately going to happen throughout your life. Therefore, as teachers, we need to be intentional about creating a classroom environment and classroom communities that teach lessons that help our students reframe their thinking around failure. After listening to my conversation with Andrea, failure will soon be a topic easily discussed and understood in your classroom with the help of her book Failure Friday.
