The reality is that so many of our students in upper elementary struggle to write at the sentence level… which impacts their reading and writing in a big way. This resource gives you a quick and easy sentence writing routine that will help your students learn how to improve their sentence writing ability.
We created a simple weekly routine that will help your students understand the rules of sentence structure and learn how to construct sentences confidently. And like all of our other literacy routines, it’s easy to implement and only takes a few minutes each day.
If you’ve been struggling to find enough time for grammar lessons or if you’ve been trying to find a more effective and engaging way to teach grammar to your students, this resource is the answer to all your sentence structure struggles.
HERE’S WHAT THE SENTENCE WRITING ROUTINE LOOKS LIKE:
Each week (40 total weeks included) your students will get a picture that they will use as inspiration to complete the following sentence writing tasks.
- Monday: Build a Sentence
- Tuesday: Write 4 Types of Sentences (Statement, Question, Command, Exclamation)
- Wednesday: Find and Fix a Fragment
- Thursday: Combine Sentences
- Friday: Unscramble the Sentence
There are 40 total student worksheets included. You’ll have just enough to get you through the entire school year!

WHAT’S INCLUDED WITH THIS RESOURCE?
- Student Worksheet: Each week, you’ll print off a worksheet that has a picture and all the sentence writing tasks for each day of the week. Students will complete one section each day of the week. It’s quick and easy and doesn’t require a ton of prep.
- Teacher Answer Key: We have provided a teacher answer key with possible answers. Most of the sentence writing tasks will have a variety of acceptable answers, but we wanted to give you some ideas of the types of responses you might expect from your students.
- Teacher Guide + Differentiation Tips: We know that your students have a range of abilities when it comes to writing sentences. We’ve provided a teacher guide along with quick and easy tips for how you can differentiate each sentence writing task during the week.
- Digital Version: Just in case you are teaching virtually or if you use Google Classroom, we’ve included a digital version of the student worksheet that is created using Google Slides.
Prep is quick and easy… Just print the weekly routine worksheet, and your students will have sentence writing practice for the entire week.
