Having a large vocabulary is so important for students in upper elementary, but requiring students to memorize word lists isn’t always the most effective way to help them build their vocabulary. With this resource, your students will develop the strategies and tools that will help them uncover and determine the meaning of unfamiliar words, especially words that contain common prefixes and suffixes.
Teachers and students love how effective this prefix and suffix routine is.

They can also best be used for morning work, distance learning, early finishers, or substitutes. Here are some other ideas for how you can use this resource:

LET’S BREAKDOWN THE WEEKLY ROUTINE:
Students will engage with the prefix and suffix (affix) of the week in the following ways:
- Monday – Students will read the affix of the week, read the two example sentences, break down the words and predict what the affix means.
- Tuesday – Students will reference a dictionary or other reference material to identify the correct definition of the weekly affix.
- Wednesday – Students draw a picture or symbol that will help them remember the meaning of the affix.
- Thursday – Students come up with a list of other words that have the same prefix or suffix.
- Friday – Students will write 2-3 sentences that contain words that have the prefix or suffix of the week.
LOVED BY BOTH TEACHERS AND STUDENTS:
→ Your students will love how fun and engaging the daily tasks are. They will enjoy being “word detectives” and digging deep into the study of the specific prefix or suffix of the week.
