Word of the week is a fun and engaging way to teach context clues. Each week your students will focus on one word used in a short paragraph. Throughout the week they will use context clues to predict the meaning, confirm the meaning with a dictionary, look for synonyms, antonyms, study the part of speech, and get plenty of practice drawing and using the word in context…And the best part, each day takes less than 10 minutes.
Students love how fun and engaging this routine is. Teachers love that it actually improves students’ ability to use context clues when reading independently.
THIS BUNDLE INCLUDES:
Level 1 was created with 3rd-grade students in mind. Level 2 was created with 4th-grade students in mind, and Level 3 was created with 5th-grade students in mind. But teachers have used all three sets in their upper elementary classrooms to provide a differentiated option for all their students.
Each word of the week word was selected from a Tier 2 or Tier 3 vocabulary list for upper elementary students. More than likely your students will have “seen” these words before, but they probably won’t be confident in their meaning. Which makes them perfect for practicing context clues.
If you want to see the exact words included in each set, you can check out the preview.
INCLUDED IN EACH WORD OF THE WEEK SET:
- Word of the Week PPT Slide (120 total for the bundle)
- Word of the Week Cards (120 total for the bundle)
- Student Booklet/Recording Worksheet
- Digital Version
- Answer Key & Teacher Guide
This resource provides engaging practice using context clues throughout the week.
HOW TO FIT IT INTO YOUR INSTRUCTIONAL DAY:
Use word of the week as part of your morning work routine, a reading warm-up, or for a vocabulary center. Students become really familiar and independent with this routine so it works great any time you need students to complete a meaningful task independently.
Teachers also really like using this resource during their small group lessons. The three different levels make it really easy for teachers to differentiate.
TEACHERS LIKE YOU SAID…
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Jessica W. says, “I use these for my reading groups as a warm-up, thinking activity. I like how it gets my students reading and analyzing the text.”
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Laura B. says, “These were great for all of my reading groups. They (students) are beginning to look at words in a sentence as more than just a detail. I will be continuing this throughout this entire school year.”
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Natalie B. says, “These are awesome! I love that I can put one or two up a day and make them a class discussion and we can practice, or I can send a few home to work on independently and discuss in small group the next day! These are very helpful!”
