Syllable Types: Lesson Plans, Posters, & Student Activities - Science of Reading

If you are a third, fourth, or fifth-grade teacher looking for effective word study lessons that will help your students read multi-syllabic words, you can stop your scroll and grab this syllable types resource. Teaching your students about the different syllable types will give them the tools needed to read and write multisyllabic words. When students enter third grade, they start to see more challenging words, and many of them have two, three, or four syllables. Even if students excelled at reading in lower elementary, they would need support to figure out how to transfer their knowledge of syllables in order to read these big words. 

You can build off of what your students already know about reading single-syllable words and help them build confidence in their ability to fluently read multi-syllabic words. And this set of lessons all about syllables can help! 

This set of lesson plans, anchor charts, and activities will help you review some basic concepts of syllables as well as introduce your students to the different types of syllables. For each syllable type, students will see examples of one, two, and three-syllable words so they can start to transition what they know about syllables to read big words.

• Scripted Teacher Lesson Plans: Each lesson plan includes the following sections: Introduce & Explain, Teach & Model, Extra Model, Guided Practice Examples, Optional Independent Practice Assignment & Closure. The lesson plans give you the language to help clearly introduce and explain each syllable type during a word study lesson.
  
• Anchor Charts: Each lesson includes a colorful anchor chart. If you don’t want to use the teaching slides, you could display the anchor chart under a document camera to help guide your lesson. You could also post this in your classroom after the lesson or give students a copy to place in their folders.
  
• Google Slide Set For Each Lesson: Each lesson includes 3 slides you can use to introduce, model, and practice reading words with each syllable type. These slides make it really easy to keep kids engaged in the lesson and make planning the teaching portion of your word study lessons super quick and easy.  (There are a total of 56 slides in the Types of Syllables presentation set.)
  
• Student Practice Pages: Each of the seven lessons on the syllable types includes two student practice pages. On these pages, students will be given the opportunity to read and break apart words with the focus syllable. They will also be given an opportunity to practice writing and spelling words with the focus syllable. They also get a chance to read sentences and a short decodable paragraph that includes words with the focus syllable. You can assign the entire practice set at one time or have students complete one section per day throughout the week. 

• Answer Key: An answer key is included.
